Description	Photograph of author Thomas Mann from the book, "The Making of an Artist, 1875-1911" by Richard Winston. During the 1930s he was a Leftist intellectual. One of several Hollywood notables to oppose the first actions of the House Unamerican Activities Committee, in a radio broadcast he said, "I have the honor to expose myself as a hostile witness. I testify that I am very much interested in the moving picture industry and that, since my arrival in the United States nine years ago, I've seen a great many Hollywood films. If Communist propaganda had been smuggled into any of them, it must have been most thoroughly hidden. I, for one, never noticed anything of the sort." He went on the criticize the Committee and compare it with the beginnings of Fascism which he saw in his native Germany.
