Historical Data
When
the
Stardust
Resort
and
Casino
opened
on
July
2
,
1958
it
had the
largest
casino
, the
largest
swimming
pool
, and the
largest
hotel
in
Las
Vegas
;
it
was
located
on
63
acres
along
the
Las
Vegas
Strip
. The
famed
Stardust
sign
became
a
symbol
of
Las
Vegas
and was
reportedly
visible
from
60
miles
away
. In
1964
a
nine-story
tower
(called
the
East
Tower)
was
erected
bringing
the
room
count
to
1,470
. In
1991
a
32-story
West
Tower
was
added
to the
resort
bringing
the
total
room
count
to
1,500
. In
addition
to this,
two
landscaped
swimming
pools
, a
golf
course
, and
athletic
facilities
were also
built
,
bringing
the
renovation
total
to
$300
million
.
Throughout
its
years
in
operation
, the
casino
resort
changed
hands
a
number
of
times
, but
unfortunately
,
it
succumbed
to the
times
and
permanently
closed
its
doors
to the
public
on
November
1
,
2006
. On
March
13
,
2007
, the
landmark
hotel
was
imploded
in a
grand
ceremony
,
which
included
fireworks
prior
to the
East
and
West
Towers
'
tumble
.
