Coachella
Valley

first
established
in the
early
18th
century
by
Spanish
conquistadores
.
Agriculture
developed
in
present-day
La
Quinta
in the
late
19th
century
and
early
20th
century
by
pre-modern
and
modern
irrigation
techniques
; in
1927
Walter
Morgan
established
the
now-famous
La
Quinta
Resort
, as a
secluded
hideway
for
Hollywood
celebrities
and
socialites
;
State
Route
111
was
constructed
and
paved
in the
1930s
; and in the
1950s
and
1960s
,
further
expansion
of
Washington
Street
connected
La
Quinta
with US
Highways
60
and
99
.
La
Quinta
,
nicknamed
"The
Gem
of the
Desert
", was
incorporated
as a
city
in
Riverside
County
in
1982
.
Growth
rose
dramatically
by the
mid-1990s
, and as of the
2000
census
, the
city's
population
was
listed
at
23,694
.
