Schultheis
was
born
in
Aachen
,
Germany
in
1900
, and
immigrated
to the
United
States
in the
mid-1920s
after
obtaining
a
Ph.D
. in
mechanical
and
electrical
engineering
. He
married
Ethel
Wisloh
in
1936
, and the
pair
moved
to
Los
Angeles
the
following
year
. He
worked
in the
film
industry
from the
late
1930s
to the
mid-1940s
,
most
notably
on the
animated
features
"
Fantasia
" and "
Pinocchio.
" His
detailed
notebook
,
documenting
the
special
effects
for "
Fantasia
"
is
the
subject
of a
14-minute
short-subject
included
on the
film's
DVD
. In
1949
, he
started
employment
with
Librascope
as a
patent
engineer
.
Schultheis
was an
avid
amateur
photographer
who
traveled
the
world
with his
cameras
.
It
was on
one
of these
photographic
exhibitions
in
1955
that he
disappeared
in the
jungles
of
Guatemala
. His
remains
were
discovered
18
months
later
. The
digitized
portion
of this
collection
represents
the
images
Schultheis
took
of
Los
Angeles
and its
surrounding
communities
after
he
relocated
to the
area
in
1937
.
Historical Data
The
San
Diego
Zoo
is
a
privately
operated
zoo
run
by the
nonprofit
Zoological
Society
of
San
Diego
.
It
incorporates
100
acres
of
parkland
leased
from the
City
of
San
Diego
, and
houses
over
3,700
animals
of
more
than
650
species
and
subspecies
. The
zoo
opened
its
doors
officially
in
1916
,
after
the
Panama-California
International
Exposition
abandoned
its
exotic
animal
exhibitions
. The
Zoological
Society
of
San
Diego
was
founded
by
Dr
.
Harry
M
.
Wegeforth
in an
October
12
,
1916
meeting
, with
Dr
.
Wegeforth
serving
as
president
of the
society
until
1941
. In
August
1921
, a
permanent
tract
of
land
in
Balboa
Park
was
set
aside
and the
zoo
began
to
move
the
following
year
. The
San
Diego
Zoo
has been a
pioneer
in
building
"
cageless
"
exhibits
and
can
boast
to
having
some
of the
largest
free-flight
aviaries
in
existence
.
Besides
an
extensive
collection
of
birds
,
reptiles
and
mammals
,
it
also
maintains
its
grounds
as an
arboretum
, with a
rare
plant
collection
. The
zoo
is
also
active
in
conservation
and
species-preservation
efforts
.
Many
species
are
bred
in
captivity
for
release
into their
native
habitats
where
appropriate
. The
San
Diego
Zoo
is
located
at
2920
Zoo
Drive
, in
Balboa
Park
,
San
Diego
.
Description
An
enormous
alligator
rests
on a
grassy
patch
inside
his
enclosure
, as his
picture
is
being
taken
. The
most
obvious
difference
between
an
alligator
and a
crocodile
lies
mainly
in the
shape
of their
snouts
.
Crocodiles
have
long
,
narrow
,
V-shaped
snouts
,
while
those of
alligators
are
wider
and
U-shaped
. This
alligator
makes
his
home
at the
San
Diego
Zoo
.
