Ian
Ruskin
,
founder
of the
Harry
Bridges
Project
,
stands
under
the
marquee
of the
Warner
Grand
Theater
on
6th
Street
prior
to
performing
his
one
man
play
, "From
Wharf
Rats
to
Lords
of the
Docks
",
which
he
produced
,
wrote
, and
narrated
based
on the
life
of
Harry
Bridges
.
Ruskin
is
a
graduate
of the
Royal
Academy
of
Dramatic
Art
in
London
and has
worked
extensively
in
theater
,
television
and
film
.
Harry
Bridges
was an
influential
American
labor
leader
in the
International
Longshore
and
Warehouse
Union
(ILWU)
,
becoming
president
in
1935
, a
post
he would
hold
for
forty
years
.
Bridges
died
in
1990
at the
age
of
89
years
old
. The
Governor
of
California
declared
July
28
,
2001
as "
Harry
Bridges
Day
" in
honor
of
Bridges
'
100th
birthday
. On that
same
day
,
San
Pedro
also
celebrated
Bridges
'
100th
birthday
. The
street
was
closed
for a
vintage
car
rally
and
Harbor
Art
Walk
,
which
portrayed
the
ILWU's
history
.
