represented
by the "
Valley
Cityhood
"
signs
,
attempted
to
disrupt
the
march
. The
issue
was a
divisive
one
:
while
a
majority
of
Valley
voters
supported
secession
,
it
was
defeated
at the
polls
. For
years
,
many
residents
in the
San
Fernando
Valley
wanted
to
form
their
own
city
. They
felt
they would
receive
better
services
if they
seceded
from
Los
Angeles
. The "
Valley
VOTE
"
campaign
rallied
behind
this
cause
. "
L.A
.
United
"
rallied
against
it
. On
November
5
,
2002
,
Angelinos
voted
against
secession
in a
special
election
, and the
effort
was
defeated
. The
Valley
with
1.4
million
residents
represents
35%
of the
population
and
50%
of the
geographic
area
of
Los
Angeles
. The
Valley
would have
become
the
sixth
largest
city
in
America
.
