Description	Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn leads an L.A. United demonstration against Valley secession at Lake Balboa, 6300 Balboa Boulevard. The opposition, as represented by the "Valley Cityhood" signs, attempted to disrupt the march. The issue was a divisive one: while a majority of Valley voters supported secession, it was defeated at the polls. For years, many residents in the San Fernando Valley wanted to form their own city. They felt they would receive better services if they seceded from Los Angeles. The "Valley VOTE" campaign rallied behind this cause. "L.A. United" rallied against it. On November 5, 2002, Angelinos voted against secession in a special election, and the effort was defeated. The Valley with 1.4 million residents represents 35% of the population and 50% of the geographic area of Los Angeles. The Valley would have become the sixth largest city in America.
