Description	Photograph date stamped March 21, 1942. View is of the north side of East 1st Street in the Little Tokyo neighborhood. City Hall hovers in the background and some businesses, such as the Nelson Hotel, Chop Suey Cafe, Nanka Shu Hotel, Hori Bros. and the Rainier Cafe, are visible on the street, which reveals various cars and some Pacific Electric streetcar tracks. Photograph caption dated October 13, 1943 reads, “‘Little Tokio’ [sic] – 968 to be evacuated. This is the north side of East First Street; Mayor reports evacuation plan to City Council.” This was referencing the overcrowding of war workers in the neighborhood that took up residence after Japanese American residents were forcibly removed and sent to internment camps. Additional photograph caption dated June 13, 1947 reads, “The new buildings, according to present plans will be constructed on north side of First Street between Alameda and Main streets, the section well known as ‘Little Tokio’ [sic]. Above is a view of the Japanese American center.”
