Description	A collage of two photos. Top view: When Chief Scott took charge, the horse-drawn steam engine was the pride of the department, while motor-propelled and motor-pumping engines were in experimental stages. However, he saw possibilities of the motor equipment and within two years, he had the entire department motorized. Photo dated: July 18, 1929. Bottom view: When Los Angeles' old fire horses were "pensioned" in 1922, the year the department was motorized, 22 gallant steeds were sent to live the rest of their lives in ease at the Griffith Park pastures as reward for service well done. Deputy Chief Berg Blake, who has been in the department 27 years and used to drive the horse-drawn engines, is pictured with the three survivors, who have ceased to respond to the "false alarms" of bells on ice cream and bakery wagons, as they used to do. Left to right: Jim, 28 years old; Bob, 33; and Blackie, 22. Photo dated: August 12, 1933.
