Presbyterianism
is
predominantly
a
Christian
denomination
. The
earliest
American
Presbyterian
churches
were
established
in
Virginia
,
New
England
,
Maryland
, and
Delaware
during
the
17th
century
and were
mainly
of
English
origin
.
Portions
of the
Presbyterian
Church
in the
United
States
have been
separated
from the
main
body
, and
some
parts
have
reunited
several
times
. The
greatest
division
occurred
in
1861
during
the
American
Civil
War
. The
two
branches
that were
created
by that
division
were
reunited
in
1983

form
the
Presbyterian
Church
(U.S.A.)
,
which
is
currently
the
largest
Presbyterian

country
. In
North
America
,
