Description	View of Ascension Lutheran Church, which is built in Spanish Colonial style, is located at 5820 West Boulevard. The church is painted cream-color and has a red-tiled roof with a bell tower on the left; a large, thin wooden cross rests against the wall on the right of the entrance. A marquee on the left lists the order of service with days and times and also states that the church has been "serving our Lord Jesus Christ in this community since 1942"; it lists Rev. Albert Starr, Jr. as Pastor of the church. The community that this is referring to is the South Crenshaw/Hyde Park District of Los Angeles. Ascension Lutheran Church has brought much needed educational, health, and hunger ministries and programs to this particular area. One of the ministry programs available is called The Neighborhood House. The Neighborhood House provides food, clothing, and Parish nursing services on a weekly basis, and serves roughly over 400 families and impacts up to 1,500 individuals per month. The religion of Lutheranism is a major branch of Protestant Christianity that identifies with the teachings of Martin Luther, a German monk and theologian who sought to reform the practices of the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century. Today, nearly 70 million Christians belong to Lutheran churches worldwide. Photo dated: April 2004.
