Historical Data	The African Methodist Episcopal Church (A.M.E. church) was the first African-American organized and incorporated denomination in the U.S. The church, born in protest against slavery and against dehumanization of African people that were brought to the American continent as free labor, has been one of the forerunners of education within the African-American Community. The A.M.E. church estimates approximately 5,000,000 members worldwide, 9,000 ministers, and 7,000 congregations in more than 30 nations.
Description	Photo shows the main entrance to St. Stephen A.M.E. Church, located at 1265 E. 64th St. and Hooper Ave. Built in the Spanish Colonial style, the church is painted white with a dark roof; an arched entrance nestles double wooden doors and a small bell tower rests on the peaked roof. Several tall palms have been planted on the premises, completing the Spanish look. Verso on photo states that this church was formerly known as Community Free Methodist Church, but it does not list when it acquired its current name. Photo dated: December 2005.
