is
the
third
location
for
Calvary
,
created
here in
1896
,
hence
the
common
use
of the
adjective
"
new
"
when
referring
to
it
. The
first
location
for
Calvary
was
near
La
Placita
on
Main
Street
and the
second
was on
North
Broadway
where
Cathedral
High
School
now
stands
.
Calvary
,
located
at
4201
East
Whittier
Boulevard
,
is
comprised
of
136
acres
and
includes
many
prominent
features
,
such
as the
Stations
of the
Cross
,
placed
at
intervals
along
the
main
drive
, and
All
Souls
Chapel
(center)
. The
chapel
was
constructed
in
1902
as a
tribute
to the
Gothic
Chapel
in
Stoke
Poges
,
Buckinghamshire
England
.
Home
of
Peace
Jewish
Cemetery
,
located
at
4334
Whittier
Boulevard
,
is
visible
in the
foreground
on the
south
side
of
Whittier
Blvd
. This
site
is
the
successor
to the
first
Jewish
cemetery
in
Los
Angeles
,
founded
in
1855
near
Chávez
Ravine
by the
Hebrew
Benevolent
Society
.
When
the
cemetery
was
relocated
to
East
Los
Angeles
, the
remains
of
360
people
were
reinterred
here
between
the
years
1902
,
when
the
cemetery
was
founded
, and
1910
.
