stately
14-story
Beaux
Arts
structure
was
designed
by
Allied
Architects
in
1922
, and
housed
the
Los
Angeles
County
courts
,
Los
Angeles
County
Coroner
,
Los
Angeles
County
Sheriff's
Office
,
Los
Angeles
County
District
Attorney
, and was for
many
years
the
primary
Los
Angeles
County
jail
,
until
it
was
damaged
by the
1994
Northridge
Earthquake
, at
which
point
it
was
completely
abandoned
. The
top
five
floors
formerly
served
as the
county's
main
jail
facility
to
famous
, or
infamous
,
residents
such
as:
Robert
Mitchum
(actor
,
served
a
50-day
sentence
on
marijuana
charges)
;
Charles
Manson
(cult-leader
serving
life
imprisonment
on
seven
counts
of
murder)
;
gangster
"
Bugsy
"
Siegal
(served
time
for
murder
but was
later
acquitted
of
all
charges)
; and
Sirhan
Sirhan
(serving
life
imprisonment
for the
murder
of
Robert
F
.
Kennedy)
among
others
. Not
only
did
the
top
floors
contain
history
, the
basement
did
as
well
;
it
housed
the
City
Morgue
and
several
pathology
labs
.
Autopsies
performed
here
included
that of
Marilyn
Monroe
, and
ironically
enough
,
Robert
F
.
Kennedy
-
whose
killer
was, or would be,
housed
a
few
floors
above
