heading
toward
3rd
St.
, in an
old-fashioned
circus
parade
the
like
of
which
the
city
hadn't
seen
for
many
years
. The
elephants
walk
past
large
buildings
as
handlers
wearing
black
shirts
and
white
hats
ride
atop
,
keeping
them in a
single-file
line
.
Throngs
turned
out
to
thrill
to the
horse-drawn
gaily-colored
wagons
with their
cargoes
of
wild
beasts
seen
at the
back
of the
herd
of
pachyderm
.
Founded
in
1883
by
five
Ringling
brothers
, the
circus
was
originally
named
The
Ringling
Brothers
Carnival
of
Fun
; in
1919
Ringling
Brothers
and
Barnum
and
Bailey
combined
to
form
Ringling
Brothers
Barnum
and
Bailey
Combined
Shows
.
Today
,
it
is
known
simply
as The
Ringling
Bros
. and
Barnum
&
Bailey
Circus
, and their
self-proclaimed
trademarked
slogan
is
: "The
Greatest
Show
on
Earth
".
Although
there are
several
commercial
buildings
visible
across
the
street
, the
two
identifiable
buildings
toward
the
right
of the
photo
are

, a
clothing
