Description	Birdseye view of Little Tokyo. Street running northeast (along the large parking lot) is 2nd St.; small street in the middle running north is Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka St. (named after a Japanese American astronaut who was a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Challenger when it exploded during takeoff in 1986); and the street on the right, running northwest is San Pedro St. Some of the identifiable buildings pictured are: Purepac Corporation; Miyako Hotel; Macpherson Leather Co.; and Elster's Restaurant Equipment & Supplies. Little Tokyo is an ethnic Japanese American district in Downtown L.A. Settled in the 1880s by immigrants, it flourished with commerce and culture until a 3-year internment of Japanese Americans during WWII practically left it all but abandoned. Luckily, Little Tokyo endured and today has become one of Downtown's biggest success stories, with millions of dollars being spent on new residential and cultural projects.
