Construction
work
on the
warehouse
began
in
February
1931
by the
J
.
V
.
McNeil
Company
(contractors)
which
hired
600
men
,
following
the
completion
of
plans
by
Samuel
H
.
Dunford
,
designer
and
engineer
.
Just
51/2
short
months
later
on
Tuesday
,
August
25
,
1931
, the
formal
opening
for the
warehouse
was
held
and was
attended
by
dignitaries
as
well
as the
general
public
. The
building
, a
reinforced
concrete
structure
of
six
floors
and
full
basement
,
covers
an
area
of
120
x
600
feet
,
providing
433,000
square
feet
of
floor
space
,
almost
the
equivalent
of
ten
acres
.
It
is
equipped
with
seven
freight
elevators
:
six
used
for
freight
, and
one
for
passengers
. The
100-foot
frontage
on
Alameda
Street
is
used
for
storefronts
,
display
rooms
, and
offices
; the
626-foot
frontage
on
9th
Street
can
be
used
for the
loading
of
44
trucks
at
one
time
, and for the
loading
and
unloading
of
38
freight
cars
, with
numerous
tracks
from the
Union
Pacific
running
into the
building
. The
Overland
Terminal
Warehouse
Company
is
a
subsidiary
of the
Union
Pacific
System
.
