. In the
spring
of
1921
,
two
lots
were
purchased
on
Merton
Ave
. in
Eagle
Rock
and
tents
were
erected
on the
property
. On
October
16
,
1921
Fr
.
Francis
Driscoll
,
O.P.
,
who
was
St
.
Dominic's
first
Pastor
,
offered
the
first
mass
inside
these
tents
. By the
end
of
October
, a
temporary
wooden
chapel
,
subsequently
known
as the "
Old
Hall
" and
later
"
DePorres
Hall
" was
built
. In
1925
, a
convent
for the
Sisters
as
well
as a
school
complex
were
completed
;
St
.
Dominic's
Catholic
school
was
founded
in
1925
,
dedicated
on
February
24th
, and
officially
opened
on
September
8th
, of that
year
. By
1940
, as the
congregation
and the
city's
population
boomed
,
construction
for a
new
church
building
began
, and the
church
opened
for
public
worship
on
Rosary
Sunday
,
1941
at its
current
location
(seen
here)
.
Eagle
Rock
is
a
neighborhood
in
northeastern
Los
Angeles
that
derives
its
name
from a
massive
boulder
at the
district's
northern
edge
,
which
contains
an
indentation
that
casts
a
vaguely
bird-shaped
shadow
on the
rock
at
certain
times
of
day
. In
1906
Eagle
Rock
became
an
independent
city
and was
incorporated
in
1911
with a
population
of
approximately
600
; in
1920
,
population
had
grown
to
2,250
.
Just
one
year
later
, in
1921
, this
figure
had
leaped
to
3,800
, and by
2005
, the
U.S
.
census
estimated
the
population
at
approximately
27,875
.
