Description	Exterior view of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church (formerly 16th Church of Christ Scientist) located at 2322 Merton Street in Eagle Rock. It shows a brick building with a red tile roof; it has four large square pillars holding up a tile "awning" the length of the entrance, and a large circular window is visible above it. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Protestant Christian denomination, which is distinguished mainly by its observance of Saturday, the "seventh day" of the week, as the Sabbath. In order to keep the Sabbath holy, Adventists abstain from secular work and other non-essential business on Saturday, refrain from participating in competitive sports, and watching non-religious programs on television. Much of the theology of the church corresponds to key evangelical teachings, some being: the Trinity and the infallibility of Scripture, the resurrection of the dead, baptism by immersion, and creation in six days. Since the 1860s when the Adventist church began, diet and health have strongly been emphasized. The church recommends vegetarianism and an avoidance of coffee and other beverages containing caffeine, it also strongly discourages its members from using alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is one of the world's fastest-growing organizations, primarily due to increased membership in developing nations. As of October 2007, it has a worldwide membership of over 15 million people, with a missionary presence in 202 out of 230 countries and territories, making it one of the most widespread Protestant denominations.
