Historical Data	Edward Lawrence Doheny, Jr. (1893-1929), "Ned" to his friends and family, was the son of namesake, Edward Laurence Doheny, Sr. His mother, Carrie Louella (Wilkins) and father divorced when he was six, and his mother committed suicide in 1901 after losing him and his sister, Eileen in a custody battle. Ned was raised by his stepmother, Carrie Estelle (Betzold) Doheny. After graduating from Los Angeles High School in 1912, Ned attended Stanford University for one semester, but transferred to the University of Southern California (U.S.C.) in January 1913. Ned married Lucy Smith, the daughter of a vice president of the Santa Fe Railroad Company in June 1913; Ned and Lucy would have 5 children. In 1916, he graduated from U.S.C. with a degree in business. After having served in World War I as a lieutenant, Ned joined his oil-tycoon father's business, eventually succeeding Doheny, Sr. upon his retirement. A few short years later, Ned was involved in the Teapot Dome scandal (1923-24), in which he came to be known as "The Bagman of Teapot Dome". In 1928, Ned received Greystone Mansion - a $3.1 million, 35-room Tudor mansion sitting on twelve and a half acres of land, as a wedding gift from Doheny Sr. Tragically, six months after moving into Greystone - on February 16, 1929, Ned was found shot to death in a mysterious murder-suicide at the hands of his close friend and confidential secretary, T. Hugh Plunkett. Ned Doheny was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. The marble canopy over his sarcophagus came from the Santa Sabina Basilica in Rome, and was said to have been a sympathy gift from Pope Pius XI. In 1932, his parents donated $1.1 million to U.S.C. to build the Edward L. Doheny, Jr. Memorial Library.
