Historical Data	The Newport Union High School district was created on September 21, 1929, and a Ground Breaking Ceremony took place on June 14, 1930. It only took three months and $410,000 to complete the original school building, inspired by Spanish Gothic architecture, with tiled rooftops and the use of arches in walkways and windows. On September 22, 1930 the school officially opened its doors with 12 faculty members and 178 students in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. The first class graduated in June 1932 and consisted of 54 students. The 1940s saw many improvements such as the addition of the Math wing, consisting of 5 classrooms, at a cost of $44,470; the addition of the Bell Tower; the construction of the metal and machine shops; and the snack bar, girl's gym and A.H. Fitzpatrick Pool were built. The 1950s saw the dedication of Dodge Hall; the completion of the Domestic Home Arts building; the completion of Beek and Sims Halls; and the addition of a clock to the tower. In 1963, Davidson Field was dedicated. In the 1970s enrollment topped 3,000 students with over 150 teachers on staff; East Hall was completed (later renamed Sims Hall); and major renovations of the auditorium were completed. The 1980s saw the opening of Heritage Hall, as well as enrollment dwindle to around 1,100. But by the turn of the millennium, enrollment had rebounded to approximately 2,200 students. Famous alumni have included actress Michelle Pfeiffer, actor Ted McGinley, and motorcycle champ Bruce Penhall. Newport Harbor High School is located at 600 Irvine Avenue in Newport, Calif.
