Historical Data
Agusti´n
Olvera
arrived
from
Mexico
in
1834
where
he had been a
Justice
of the
Peace
, and
held
various
offices
in the
Mexican
administration
. In
1842
he was
granted
Rancho
Mission
Viejo
, and
three
years
later
, was also
granted
the
35,501-acre
Rancho
Cuyamaca
.
Olvera
is
noted
for
helping
to
bridge
the
gap
between
the
governance
of
California
by
Mexico
and the
U.S.
;
helping
sign
the
Treaty
of
Cahuenga
,
thus
ending
the
war
in
California
; was
appointed
to be
Judge
of the
First
Instance
in
1849
; was
elected
as the
first
county
judge
of the
newly
formed
County
of
Los
Angeles
in
1850
; and
eventually
entered
private
practice
law
. In
1877
, the
Los
Angeles
City
Council
changed
the
name
of
Wine
Street
to
Olvera
Street
in his
honor
.
Marchessault
Street
is
named
for
French
Canadian
,
Damien
Marchessault
,
who
served
as
mayor
of
Los
Angeles
from
1859-1860
, and
again
from
1861-1865
.
During
his
term
in
office
, the
Plaza
Church
was
rebuilt
and the
City
Gas
Company
was
organized
.
Marchessault
committed
suicide
in the
city
council
chamber
in
1868
,
after
becoming
despondent
over
public
criticism
of the
water
system
and
over
gambling
debts
.
