former
settlement
of
Encino
Rancho
.
It
was the
seventeenth
mission
built
in
Alto
California
.
It
was
built
in a
quadrangle
,
similar
to
other
missions
, in
which
the
church
makes
up
one
corner
. In
1804
,
nearly
1,000
Indians
lived
at the
mission
and had
learned
the
important
trades
,
which
included
blacksmithing
,
farming
,
ranching
,
carpentry
,
weaving
,
leathermaking
brick
making
,
soap
making
and
wine
making
. There are
over
2,000
people
buried
in the
cemetery
at the
mission
,
most
of them
Indians
.

beautiful
and
spacious
park
located
at
15174
San
Fernando
Mission
Boulevard
,
across
the
street
from
Mission
San
Fernando
Rey
de
Espan~a
. This
photograph
shows
an
unidentified
woman
sitting
on the
ledge
of the
original
mission
fountain
-
which
now
stands
some
30
feet
from its
first
location
.
Curiously
enough
, she
sits
next
to the
sign
that
clearly
reads
: "
Keep
Off
Fountain
". Also
featured
, but not
visible
in this
shot
,
is
an
old
soap
works
, a
large
and
oddly
shaped
reservoir
from
which
the
mission
fathers
were
supplied
with
water
, and
Barnham's
life-sized
statue
of
Father
Juni´pero
Serra
, with his
arm
around
an
Indian
boy
.
