is
a
rocky
island
off
the
coast
of
California
,
located
about
22
miles
south-southwest
of
Los
Angeles
. The
island
is
22
miles
long
and
eight
miles
across
, and has a
total
population
of
3,696
persons
, with
85%
living
in its
only
city
of
Avalon
, and
approximately
298
others
living
in the
second
,
much
smaller
resort
village
,
called
Two
Harbors
.
Two
Harbors
is
located
at the
isthmus
of the
island
,
north
of
Avalon
, and
is
the
primary
landing
spot
for those
who
wish
to
tour
the
western
half
of the
island
. The
Isthmus
of
Santa
Catalina
is
a
770-meter
section
of
land
that
joins
the
northwestern
portion
of
Santa
Catalina
Island
to the
main
part
of the
island
.
Part
of the
isthmus
is
occupied
by the
town
of
Two
Harbors
,
named
for
two
harbors
on
either
side
of the
isthmus
:
Isthmus
Cove
and
Catalina
Harbor
.
Two
Harbors
lies
on the
leeward
side
facing
Isthmus
Cove
. In the
1860s
, a
small
garrison
of
Union
troops
were
stationed
at the
Isthmus
on the
island's
west
end
for
about
nine
months
following
the
island's
brief
goldrush
experience
. Their
barracks
stand
as the
oldest
structure
on the
island
and
is
currently
home
of the
Isthmus
Yacht
Club
.
Santa
Catalina
Island
is
visited
by
about
a
million
tourists
each
year
.
Description
Two
women
can
be
seen
overlooking
the
bay
at the
Isthmus
of
Santa
Catalina
. A
large
ship
and
numerous
boats
riddle
the
bay
and a
cluster
of
small
structures
,
possibly
huts
, are
visible
on the
beach
.
Tropical
palms
, a
sandy
beach
, and
smooth
crystal
clear
waters
are
reminiscent
of
many
South
Sea
tropical
islands
,
making
this a
heavenly
paradise
on
California's
own
doorstep
.
