puppeteer
and
co-founder
of the
Yale
Puppeteers
and the
Turnabout
Theater
,
which
was a
full-time
marionette
company
that
existed
from
1940-1956
,
regularly
selling-out
all
seats
.
Carlo
Osvaldo
Goldoni
(1707-1793)
was a
celebrated
Italian
playwright
and
librettist
,
whom
critics
rank
among
the
European
theatre's
greatest
authors
.
It
is
said
that the
first
playthings
in the
childhood
of this
famous
writer
were
puppets
,
which
he
made
dance
in the
puppet
theatre
that his
father
Giulio
had
built
for him in their
home
.

This
photograph
shows
a
valuable
collection
of
antique
puppets
,
exhibited
inside
a
glass
case
at the
Los
Angeles
Public
Library
. A
small
sign
above
the
puppets
reads
"
Auspices
of the
Art
Department
", and
another
sign
visible
at the
bottom
of the
display
reads
"A
set
of
18th
Century
Goldoni
Puppets
loaned
by
Harry
Burnett
from his
European
Collection
".
