Historical Data	Phineas Banning, businessman, stagecoach driver, entrepreneur, and often referred to as the 'Father of the Port of Los Angeles", was born in Delaware in 1831, came to Los Angeles in 1851 and began at once to take active interest in affairs. He founded the town of Wilmington and was manager of the Los Angeles and Wilmington Ry. He served as Brigadier General, 1st Brigade, California militia. One of the prime movers in the early development of San Pedro Harbor. He married 1st, Rebecca Sanford in 1870; 2nd, Mary E. Hollister. Banning died in 1885.
Description	Portrait of Phineas Banning. He arrived in San Pedro in 1851 and engaged in freighting by stagecoach between Los Angeles and San Pedro. He quickly saw the possibilities of a harbor at San Pedro and was the person most responsible for its development. Father of Los Angeles transportation.
